Thirteen

When Helen answered her phone as she was walking out the door to her first showing of the day, the very last person’s voice she expected to hear was Eric’s.

“Helen, we have to talk.”

“Oh, hello,” she said, her voice naturally rising in surprise. Glancing behind her at Sam, she casually walked out of the bedroom, where he stood fastening his watch to his wrist, praying he wouldn’t follow her. “What a nice surprise.”

“I need to see you right away.”

“Um, sure. Is there something wrong?”

“Yeah,” he said. “We have a problem.”

A whole litany of possibilities scrolled through her head, and she didn’t like any of them. Obviously, something had happened with Claire. Her daughter had probably told him they couldn’t see each other anymore because she was too busy with the bakery. If so, she’d have a long talking-to with Claire immediately.

Huddled up in the little alcove near the stairs, Helen whispered into the phone. “What? I thought everything was going so well?”

“Yeah,” he said wryly. “That’s the problem.”

Sam chose that moment to head out of the bedroom and toward the stairs. She couldn’t tip him off that she was talking to her daughter’s boyfriend. Sam wouldn’t appreciate her interference, and besides, he might tell Claire. This situation would not be improved if things got out of control.

“Uh, perhaps I could show you the house after you get off work,” she said loudly, praying Eric would understand her odd segue.

Sam paused on the landing to stare at her. Ugh. What had she said that had gotten his attention?

“Is Claire there?” Eric asked.

She rolled her eyes. Both men clearly had no idea how to let things go.

“Not exactly,” she hedged. To the hulking man on the stairs, she said, “I’ll be done in just a minute, Sam.”

Instead of going away like any normal person, Sam stood there listening to her conversation.

“Your husband?” Eric asked.

“Right.”

“Can you meet at the Chameleon?” he suggested.

“Seven o’clock would be just fine. Bye.”

She hung up before this conversation got completely out of hand. But as she put her phone to sleep, Sam scowled in her general direction.

“I thought we were going out to dinner,” he said, his frustration evident.

Drat—she’d forgotten all about that. “It’s just a quick showing. It shouldn’t take long. I’ll meet you at the restaurant.”

It wasn’t like she could cancel on Eric. Whatever was going on, she had to manage it. Claire could not lose this one. He was too perfect, and Helen had already done so much to help secure this relationship for her daughter. Sam would have to understand.

Besides, they’d gone out to dinner together a thousand times. There was nothing special about tonight that Sam couldn’t wait for her.

But he turned and went downstairs without another word, his expression crestfallen as if she’d kicked his puppy or something. Honestly.

She fretted about the seven o’clock meeting all day and wished she could’ve met Eric during the day sometime, but her own idiocy with acting like she’d been talking to a client had caused it to unfold like it had.
